About Us

Our beginning

In April 1991, the Optimist Club of Downie invited a group of enthusiastic people from Mitchell and area to become involved in Optimism. The Downie Optimists Club became the sponsor of the new Mitchell Optimist Club and we have moved forward ever since.

We try to keep in touch with other local Optimist Clubs, such as the Monkton and Sebringville and Stratford Clubs. Just recently we became involved in the "Adopt-a-Club" project, where we try share our ideas to help others grow. We try to host and attend interclub dinners and activities, and help each other to make things better for our kids.

On-going projects include the upkeep of playground equipment situated in Mitchell "on the hill” beside the Lion’s pool.   For the past number of  years we did our best to upkeep, add on and repair this equipment as needed.

In 2007 we totally renewed our playground with brand new equipment.  We thought we would update before new regulations forced us to do so.

Within the community we helped out where we can in local events by like minded organizations.  We have a food booth at the local fair and at community events. We raise awareness and funds through our annual quilt show, fashion show, and bake sales and even helped sponsor a good old fashioned Barn Dance. Our efforts are helped by working together with other agencies and service groups, including the Mitchell Lions Club, Mitchell Legion, Mitchell and Area Community Outreach, local schools, etc.  We also promote bike safety with our annual Bike Rodeo, and maintain a visible co-operation with law enforcement.  In 2007 we were able to  donate a new properly equiped bike to the OPP for use as a means to better interconnect with the youth while on patrol.  This was through the help of the Monkton Optimist Club and the former Fullarton Optimists.

We enjoy sharing the costs of operating the Galbraith Optimist Camp for Kids. Here a staff of highly qualified young adults provides kids of the community with physical activities, safety lessons both on water and in the bush, as well as a great opportunity to practice interaction with their peers.

Our Club Meetings are held on the first and third Tuesday of every month.

  • 1st Tuesday dinner meeting at the Friendship Centre .
  • 3rd Tuesday business meeting at the Mitchell and District High School Library.

One way we help in the community is through our M.O.S.T. program. This takes place during the summer holidays every year.
